Ways to Overcome Overgeneralization When Teaching Korean to Russian-Speaking Students (Pre-Bilingual Stage)

Abstract. The paper considers overgeneralization as an intra-linguistic phenomenon frequently observed among Russian-speaking students studying Korean and resulting in language mistakes. The article examines overgeneralization as a type of interference, reveals causes and effects of linguistic interference, describes the existing methodological approaches to overcoming linguistic interference. The author analyzes mistakes of first-year students studying Korean as a foreign language, systematizes cases of overgeneralization, differentiates overgeneralization and intra-linguistic interference, classifies overgeneralization mistakes depending on students’ language proficiency, proposes methodological recommendations to overcome overgeneralization when teaching Korean to Russian-speaking junior students. The researcher describes overgeneralization mistakes of Russian-speaking junior students studying Korean as a foreign language, suggests methodological recommendations to overcome overgeneralization, and herein lies scientific originality of the study. As a result, it is shown that the overgeneralization phenomenon manifests itself at all the language levels and provokes phonetic, graphical, lexical and grammar mistakes that can be avoided by using specially developed tasks.
